2010 "Key to Quality" Awards Nomination

"Key to Quality" Nominations Deadline - March 31, 2010

The National Association of Health Care Assistants - NAHCA - recognizes excellence through its prestigious series of awards for outstanding caregivers and their professional achievements and contributions in providing the highest quality of care attainable. The awards, which are bestowed each year at NAHCA's Annual "Key to Quality" Awards Banquet, recognize exceptional NAHCA members working as caregivers to benefit long term care and improve the quality of life for residents and staff. The "Key to Quality" awards were established in 1995 in pursuit of caregiver recognition. This year marks our 16th annual "Key to Quality" Awards Banquet. This event will be the "crown jewel" to NAHCA's Annual Convention and Exposition where we truly do "Celebrate the Stars of Long Term Care". The "Key to Quality" Awards Banquet will be held Thursday June 3rd at 6:30 pm.  Don't miss this opportunity to recognize your caregivers for all their hard work. it is far too important to our profession, and more specifically, to your caregivers. Please submit your nominations for NAHCA's 2010 awards by March 31, 2010.

We hope that in addition to your nominations, you will choose to attend this magical event of celebration and excellence, including the convention. Come join your peers in honoring and paying tribute to those whose achievements and contributions have helped make this profession great and will assure its future.

"Key to Quality" Nomination  Categories

NAHCA Champion of the Year (COTY)

The NAHCA Champion of the Year award will go to the person or persons who best support the NAHCA program in their facility. The recipient could be an Administrator, Director of Nursing, Staff Development or any department head or administrative personnel who's support has directly improved the internal NAHCA Program by offering assistance, guidance and resources to support the NAHCA process at the facility level.

Facility of the Year

The Facility receiving this honor will be a NAHCA member who sponsors innovative programs, continual education, professional development opportunities, teamwork and person-centered care. They must have a dedicated NAHCA program with a strong commitment to staff as well as residents. 

CNA of the Year

The recipient will have a minimum of five years experience with your facility and possess all of the qualities and attributes of all of the following award categories: Quality Care Provider, Resident Services Commitment, Team Leader, Resident/Family Service, Best Attitude, Preceptor of the Year, CQI, Professional Appearance, Perfect Attendance, Most Thoughtful and Safety.

The Stella Parrish Lifetime Achievement

The recipient of this award will have 20 or more years of experience, be an outstanding quality of care provider, display a positive attitude, serve residents by respecting their rights and have above-average attendance. This award is to recognize a lifetime of achievement in all areas of geriatric nursing assistance. This award is named for and in honor of a great lady who gave 30 years of her life as a caregiver and never missed a single day of work. This is our most prestigious award!

Quality Care Provider

The recipient of this award will be chosen for their total commitment to quality. The nominee should have sufficient experience and display an ongoing commitment to quality in the most “trying times” with even the most difficult of residents. This member accepts nothing less than quality from themselves.

Resident Services Commitment

The recipient of this award will be chosen for their commitment to their residents. This is a member who takes extra effort and sacrifice to be there for the double and triple shifts during snow days, someone who stays over to read or visit with a needy resident. This person puts the residents above all others.

Rookie of the Year

The recipient of this award will have completed one year of service to their facility. They should have successfully completed the nursing assistant course work and be certified. The recipient must have maintained above-average attendance with a positive attitude in all areas regarding the roles and responsibilities of a caregiver. This nominee should be the type of member you wish there were more of.

Assisted Living Caregiver of the year

The recipient of this award is a CMA or direct caregiver who is currently employed in an assisted living or residential care facility for a minimum of two years. The nominee must possess all of the qualities and attributes of all of the following award categories: Quality Care Provider, Resident Services Commitment, Team Leader, Resident/Family Service, Best Attitude, Preceptor of the Year, CQI, Professional Appearance, Perfect Attendance, Most Thoughtful, and Safety. This is our top honor in residential care.

Veterans

The recipient of this award will have served 10 or more years as a Caregiver (a minimum of three years with your current facility) with outstanding performance reviews. This is a member who works well with others and could be considered a team leader.

Team Leader

The recipient of this award will be an outstanding supporter of the “team approach” and provide quality resident care. This person not only works well as a team player, but also stands out as a leader. A minimum of two years experience required.

Resident/Family Service

The recipient of this award will be a caregiver who has an excellent rapport with the residents and their families. This is a person who has the confidence of the residents’ families, who makes residents and their families wish there were more caregivers like this recipient. This member treats families and the residents with respect and dignity.

Best Attitude

The recipient of this award will display a positive attitude toward residents, coworkers, administration, charge nurses, families and other departments. This member can find the bright side of all situations and can adapt and accept change positively.

Preceptor of the Year

The recipient must be a NAHCA Certified Preceptor. The recipient must demonstrate the qualities necessary to successfully train new nursing assistants. The qualities are: patience, compassion, knowledge of job skills, nurturing attitude, positive outlook and good communication skills, which are necessary for effective instruction. This is a member who is dedicated to the professional development of new nursing assistants.

Humanitarian

The recipient of this award has gone above and beyond the call of duty to assist a resident with lifesaving procedures, has made observations that have enhanced the quality of life, or has provided additional care and attention to a resident during the dying process.

Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI)

The recipient of this award is driven to explore new ideas in care delivery and searches out new solutions to old problems. This member is willing to participate in committees, e.g., safety, QA, etc. This recipient looks forward to challenges, creates solutions and welcomes change.

Professional Appearance

The recipient of this award sets standards for appropriate duty apparel. This member dresses for success as a caregiver and displays pride in their work through their professionalism of dress and appearance.

Perfect Attendance

The recipient will have completed a minimum of one year of service with perfect attendance. This member sets the standards for others to follow.

Most Thoughtful

This recipient follows the "GOLDEN RULE" from the NAHCA Statement of Standards: “I render care as I would have it given to me if I were in their place.” This member is one who truly believes there are “no unimportant jobs, no unimportant people, and no unimportant acts of kindness.”

Restorative Care

This recipient displays knowledge and competence in restorative care and possesses the skills to promote the highest practicable level of functioning. This member has had a significant impact in restoring functioning level to residents who have been able to live independently as a result of this care.

Safety

This recipient must be accident-free for at least one year. This member must be conscientious of safety procedures, must practice instant housekeeping, and follow facility infection control policy and procedures to enhance safety and prevent the spread of disease.

"Key to Quality" Nomination Rules

  • Nominees must be NAHCA members or work at a NAHCA member facility.
  • Each nominee must be certified or successfully passed your states requirements to be a nursing assistant.
  • Nominees must have been employed in your facility for a minimum of one (1) year.
  • Nominees must meet all the criteria of the award category for which they are being nominated.
  • Nominations must be submitted via online form, mailed or faxed to the NAHCA office using the form provided.
  • The Nomination forms may be duplicated as needed.
  • If you are nominating a member for more than one award, please copy and complete a separate form for each award category.
  • Either the facility's Administrator or Director of Nursing must sign all forms that are faxed or mailed into the NAHCA office.
  • Forms must be completed in their entirety. All questions must be answered.
  • Nominations must be received by no later than March 20, 2010

Tips and Recommendations

  • Be specific and be creative. Hundreds of nominations are received in each category. To ensure that your nomination is among the finalist, you must write an outstanding nomination. Write what makes that member an exceptional nominee.

  • Start out early so you will not be rushed. Your nominations must be received by NAHCA no later than March 20, 2010.

  • All nominations entries must be typed or printed.

  • We recommend submitting nominations online or via mail. Faxed copies are sometimes difficult to read.

  • A person who knows the member's work should submit nominations: Administrator, Director of Nursing, NAHCA Leadership Team member, immediate supervisors, or co-workers.

  • Share the nomination rules with anyone who will be writing nominations.
